Hot Stamps and Green Pants: Growing Up in the 50's and 60's by Genny Zak Kieley
A close up view of the 50s and 60s comes to life through a combination of first-hand remembrances, photos and research. We are taken on a trip for a glimpse back in time with a lively narrative that tells the story of what it was like to live back then.
The book begins with a sweet journey back to the author’s childhood. It was a time when bikes were big and bulky. Ladies from the neighborhood stuck to a strict routine of Monday was wash day, Tuesday ironing day and so on and there was seldom deviation from this rule. Drive-in movies and restaurants were the hot spot on a Saturday night. Busy housewives saved up their coveted green stamps from the grocery store and dreamed of what they could buy with them. For a child in the 50s and 60s, a trip to the Dime Store was like going to dreamland. Families sat around the counsel black and white television to watch their favorite TV family like Leave it to Beaver or Father Knows Best, and emulated them in their own life. Huge changes were taking place in the 50s and 60s; but most families lived a fairly simple life in comparison to today.

A Jesuit in Belize: The Life and Adventures of Father Buck Stanton in Nineteenth Century Central America by John Stanton and William Kane
This biography of Father William ‘Buck’ Stanton follows the life and
times of a Jesuit missionary in turn-of-the century Central America.
It paints a portrait of a gentle priest who traveled the world as an
explorer, scientist, teacher and humanitarian. Though recently
updated, the story was originally published in the 1920s and captures
the coarse social attitudes of the day.
The reader gets an intimate look at a good-natured explorer fluent in
three languages who could kill and eat an alligator on his way
through the jungle to teach children to read, or preside over
weddings. It is also a snapshot of a turbulent time in world history
lost to the memory of recent generations.
